CINEMA DRAFTHOUSE – MOVIE NIGHT AT THE INDY:

Four years after what many consider the best finish in Super Bowl history, the Giants and Patriots are facing off once more for the NFL championship. Although there are no perfect records on the line, this matchup could be just as enticing.

It certainly looks more even heading into Sunday’s big game. In 2008, with New England undefeated and having beaten New York in the regular-season finale, the Patriots were 12-point favorites. The spread now is 3, and the Giants beat the Patriots during the season.

Both teams are on quite a roll, too. The Patriots (15-3) have won 10 straight — of course they had won 18 in a row in ‘08 — and the Giants (12-7) have five consecutive victories.

Leni Stern and the Masters of African Percussion

When German-born guitarist Leni Stern traveled to Mali in 2005, she met master musician Bassekou Kouyate, and became entranced with the local percussion instruments and style — later releasing albums such as 2007′s Africa and 2010′s Sa Belle Belle Ba, incorporating the West African sound. A lifelong musician (she won Gibson’s Female Jazz Guitarist of the Year award for five consecutive years) and traveler, she was inspired, to the say the least. At Yoshi’s, she’ll play guitar, n’goni ba, and jeli n’goni, alongside Kofo on talking drum, Alioune Faye on djembe, and Mamadou on bass and additional percussion. (Savage)

“Between Me and the Other World”

Dissecting wounds in under-reported aspects of American history has allowed Joanna Haigood to create some of the Bay Area’s most remarkable dance theater works. So there is every reason to look forward to her newest endeavor, “Between Me and the Other World,” which examines W.E.B. Du Bois’ concept of “double-consciousness,” as analyzed in his The Souls of Black Folk. Using the “veil” as a metaphor, Du Bois eloquently explained the fractured state of being imposed on people who are not allowed to be themselves. Written in 1903, his observations have stood the test of time. For “Between” Haigood, in addition to her own dancers, has enlisted first-rate collaborators in Antony Brown for the music and David Slzasa for the design. This is a work in progress showing and includes a post-performance discussion. (Rita Felciano)

WINGS!!!
Sunday, as you likely know, is the one day a year when the flavored chicken wing, often reserved for late-night dorm runs and middle-age shame eating, emerges from the shadows and struts around like an arrogant rooster. In honor of that,I sampled four varieties of wings each at three of the East Bay’s wing-specialty shops in hopes of finding Superbowl Sunday’s best bet. The clear winner was Ghost town’s Red Buffalo, where the wings moist, tender, and full of meaty flavor, not to mention large for a standard broiler hen. The sizzling hot wing, made with a combo of old-school Trappey’s fire sauce and fresh jalapeños, bowled me over with its intensity. The deeply smoky chipotle wing was also a scorcher, with just a bit less vinegar in the sauce. Both hot wings had little pepper pieces embedded in the skin, a nod to thoughtful, handmade preparation. Also pepper-specked was the sweet chili glaze, a mildly cloying Thai-accented wing. The dry Jamaican wing was a savory treat, dusted in allspice, garlic powder, and a few other jerk flavors.
